Engineering literature is full of materials on various aspects of BW planning, loading, stability, designs, and effects assessments. In this piece let us attempt to understand some interesting aspects of BW engineering. The efforts resulted in the refinement of existing formulae and coefficients, and yielded new ones. Physical scale modeling tests – such as those in the massive Delta Flume in Emmeloord (the Netherlands), and in the CERC (Coastal Engineering Research Center) facilities in Vicksburg, Mississippi were some of the examples. The risk of failure, the scale and cost of such massive structures – have generated renewed research interests in coastal labs around the world. But near the end of the construction period – a storm that registered a lower wave height, dislodged about 2/3rds of the units – and some subsequent less powerful storms did the rest of the work by destroying the BW. ![]() The Sines Deepwater (~ 50 m) BW was designed and constructed of massive 42 tonne armor-layer dolos ( dolos are pre-fab concrete units, designed to achieve good interlocks and stability when placed randomly – each unit has three stems, the central and the two twisted ones on ends) to withstand waves up to 100-year extreme of 11 m high significant wave (see Spectral Wavesfor definition). During my studies at Delft in 1982 – the event and the possible lapses and causes of its failure – came for discussions again and again in coastal engineering lectures. ![]() Ever since the 1978 failure of a massive breakwater (BW) in Port Sines, Portugal – coastal engineers around the world went back to reviewing the BW design approaches and methods. ![]() If you choose to make a payment via a bank wire, local and international banks may charge their associated service fees, which are not normally covered by e-wallet service provider costs. Other deposit-related fees users need to be aware of include bank wire service fees and conversion fees. Larger e-wallet providers usually offer the same rate for all methods, while smaller e-wallets such as STICPAY offer a variable rate, for example, 1% for bank wire and crypto desposits, 3.85% for Visa and Mastercard deposits, and 1.5% for UnionPay. The service fees charged by e-wallets for deposit transactions depend on the deposit method chosen. In May 2012 The Official Highway Code app for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad was launched, priced £3.99. ![]() In 2011 the Highway Code joined social networking websites Twitter and Facebook to share reminders of the rules of the road. The 1990s saw a new format taller booklet and the inclusion of a section geared to the new driving theory test, which in the current edition has now become part of the Code itself. Prompted by soaring car crime statistics, the amended version contained advice on vehicle security. The 70-page 1978 edition introduced the Green Cross Code for pedestrians and the new orange badges for people with a disability. After decimalisation reprinted editions cost just 6 new pence. Photographs and 3D illustrationsīy the sixth edition in 1968 photographs and 3D illustrations had been included to help make rules clear and the price had risen from 6 old pence to 1s 3d (6p). It explained such things as how to use exit slip roads and advising drivers to avoid drowsiness by stretching their legs at the parking or service areas. The arrival of motorways in the late 1950s led to the inclusion, in the fifth edition, of a new section on motorway driving. The 1954 Highway Code, complemented by brand new colour illustrations, gave over the back cover to first aid guidance, while the expanded traffic signs section contained the first triangular warning signs. Stopping distances made their first appearance in the third edition, along with new sections giving hints on driving and cycling. Road signsĭiagrams of road signs - just 10 signs in all - were first seen in the second edition, as was a warning about the dangers of driving when affected by alcohol or fatigue. Since those early days, regular revisions of the Code have reflected changes in technology and developments in traffic management and road safety. included advice to drivers of horse drawn vehicles to ‘rotate the whip above the head then incline the whip to the right or left to show the direction in which the turn is to be made.’.contained 18 pages of advice, compared to 135 pages in the 2007 edition.was the only one to carry advertisements, for the AA, The Autocar magazine, The Motorcycle magazine, Castrol Motor Oil, BP, Motor Union Insurance and the RAC.The first edition was published in 1931, it: More than a third of the original 24-page booklet described the various hand signals the police and road users should use, compared to the single page given to the subject in the current edition. Nowadays, advice on how to cross the road fills a whole chapter, but in the early days it only merited a paragraph. For example, in 1931 mirrors were not even mentioned and drivers were advised to sound their horn when overtaking. However, other aspects of the code have changed considerably. Some things have not changed over the years: the very first edition of The Highway Code urged all road users to be careful and considerate towards others, putting safety first. Today there are more than 27 million vehicles on our roads but, thanks to greater public awareness, advances in technology and the introduction of British summer time, only half the number of road deaths occur. When it was first launched in 1931 there were just 2.3 million motor vehicles in Great Britain, yet over 7,000 people were killed in road accidents each year. It’s one of the few books in print that can lay claim to saving thousands of lives. Hundreds of thousands of copies of The Highway Code are sold each year, ensuring that it never leaves the bestseller lists. In 1973 the number of drivers had risen to about 20 million and a centralised computer-based licensing system was brought in to cope with the huge increase in demand for both driver and vehicle licences. But it was only during the 1960s, when cars became more affordable, that motoring really took off. By 1939 this figure had risen to 3 million. In 1921 there were only 1 million drivers in Britain. The fee for the first driving licence, which was obtained over the counter at Post Offices, was 5 shillings (25p).įailure to sign your driving licence with your ‘ordinary signature’ could lead to a fine of up to £5. Overview of road safety in Great Britainĭriver licences were first introduced in Britain by the Motor Car Act, 1903, purely as a means of identifying vehicles and their drivers.Īll motor vehicles had to be registered, display registration marks and be licensed annually at a cost of 20 shillings (£1). In any case, binaural beats are quite fascinating. BUT if you’re not, skip to the next section. If you’re the type of person who likes the nitty gritty details of how something works, read this section. When your brain waves synchronize to the sound waves of the binaural beats, the result is a state of deep relaxation. When the binaural beat sounds enter your ears they produce something in your brain called “brainwave entrainment.” What is Brain Entrainment?īrainwave entrainment is a fancy term that basically means altering your brainwaves to adjust to the pace and rhythm of a sound such as those created by binaural beats. It was a physicist named Heinrich Wilhelm Dove who discovered the way binaural beats work in 1839. Put simply, binaural beats are a form of rhythmic and repetitive sound frequencies which put you into a meditative state easily. It is trying to tune its strings to a note the scale.Īs typing on a cellphone has never been a strong skill of mine. From the trance-inducing sounds of drum beats in tribal shamanic cultures to the repetitive chanting of Tibetan monks, rhythmical sound has extremely powerful healing benefits. It is felt, more than heard and I believe the brain responds by matching the beat with a rhythm it already uses or in essence it begins marching in step with a familiar tune. The tones I’ve listened to, so far, seem to be using lower fundamental starting tones so that the sum component is still in the “low bass” region of hearing and the difference component becomes the “sensation” of that sub-audible tone. Musicians tune their instruments with each other by eliminating the beating when two notes get closer and closer together. You will predominantly hear the high pitched tone, but it will “warble” at 50hz and you can detect those amplitude changes. A 1Khz tone in one transducer (your left ear for instance) and a 1050hz tone in the other (right ear) beat together and produce sum =2.05Khz (the tall waves) and difference =50hz (the deep troughs). Our brain too, it seems, provides that resonance function. This combining, or beating, of two frequencies together can sometimes be sensed, felt or heard in your car if you open the back window just a bit while the opposite front window is cracked too… the passenger compartment becomes a resonant chamber and the air fronts combine additively and produce a thumping sound (entire stores sometimes resonate disturbingly loudly if one of many supply fans are not balanced properly). In sound, as you know, the waves are air movement in waves and our ears convert these to electrical waves to be interpreted by our brain. As a new wave moves forward from a steady source of disturbance, in the center or the pool, and a reflection wave bouncing back off the wall, or reflected back to the source, meet at some point along the way… these two wave fronts commingle some combine positively (creating peaks higher than either original) or negatively (producing troughs or valleys). ![]() ![]() You can also think about standing waves in a small pool. ![]() The term “beats” is the clue… a beat frequency is one that arises from the addition and subtraction between the two fundamental frequencies being linearly “mixed” or, more accurately, “combined”. Check our second guide on How to lucid dream with binaural beats! For example, if you like using the WILD technique, you can start listening to them after your early alarm wakes you up. Now you’ve set everything up, you can use your desired lucid dreaming technique, such as the WILD or DILD.īinaural beats are very versatile and can be used when you go to bed at night or when you’re waking up early during your REM phase of sleep. Now is the time to employ a visualization technique, or repeat (in your mind) an affirmation over and over again.Īn example of a good affirmation would be “I’m becoming aware of my dreams.” 6) Further lucid dreaming technique What this means is that, while you’re incredibly relaxed, you’ll still have power over your thoughts. – After a while, you will hopefully find yourself in a very tranquil, yet slightly focused state. 4) Combine with a visualization or affirmation technique Just ensure your stresses are evaporating into thin air as your mind and body relaxes. – It doesn’t matter whether you focus on your breathing, the sounds that you’re listening to, or whatever. Ideally, you want to use delta wave binaural beats (between 4Hz – 8hz). ![]() – Listen to your binaural beats recording with headphones. A comfy mattress or soft couch will make all the difference. – Lay down and ensure you’re in a comfortable position. If you'd like to share an idea or project, please share them with the community. The great thing about this wing is that instead of giving others what they need at the cost of their own needs, these kinds of Twos are more comfortable simply sharing the innate qualities they already have – and enjoying the friendship and admiration it gets them. But with a Three wing, this drive isn’t displayed in the form of serving and taking care of others, but rather in thinking that their friendship and attention is already enough of a gift to others. At least, a tad bit more than Twos with a One wing, who incorporate the self-critical, idealistic aspects of Ones rather than the image-conscious, competitive traits of Threes. Twos with a Three wing are often more ambitious concerning their personal goals. Mix a little bit of the Three personality into the Two type, and what do you get? A more confident, charming and maybe even a bit seductive personality flavour. ![]() SCID foals have increased susceptibility to infection by viral, bacterial, fungal and protozoan organisms. The genetic defect results in lack of activity of the enzyme DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK) which is critical for development of immune system diversity and its ability to protect against infections. Tulsa World journalist Andrea Eger, who attended Stapleton's first concert since he had to reschedule dates due to a hand injury, expressed, "there were absolutely no signs he wasn’t 100 percent–and he's one of those singers for whom recording simply does too little justice to the quality of his live vocals," while Cleveland Scene 's Laura Morrison, who attended a different date, wrote, "his wizened and chest-aching vocals howled to the moon last night just as righteously as they do on his albums."
